News & Notes:
It's Here!!
Jessie Rodenberg
Another season has snuck up on us! Soon the leaves will be turning, the north wind will be blowing, the bucks will be chasing, and the ducks will be flying. This is without a doubt my favorite time of the year.
All of the hard work put into planting food plots, hanging stands, and prepping the duck blind is soon to pay off. If you're like us we love to have numerous stands and blinds to hunt from in an attempt to minimize our hunting pressure. This concept applies to our waterfowl, whitetail and even turkeys. We like to get in and get out while mixing up the blinds or property we are hunting as much as possible. I hope this little tip helps you to be more productive in the field.
Spring Food Plots
Gary Albertson
Getting your spring food plots put in can be a real hassle when the spring rains won't stop. The last thing you need on your only day off, or when the soil is finally ready for planting, is to have an equiptment problem. If you've got a machine shed or storage building to work in the rainy days can be used to inspect your machinery and make any repairs they might need. Keeping your seed stored in a cool dry place is ideal to maintain high germination levels. When soil conditions are right and the planting window is open work quickly as it might be the only chance you have to get the seed in the ground under ideal conditions. Having a properly prepared seed bed free of weeds and debris is essential to having good soil to seed contact and will give your seed the best chance of getting off to a good start.
When you have a spring like we are having here in North Central Missouri it doean't hurt to have a Plan B. Getting corn planted when the rains just will not let up or when your plots are located on a flood plain might be next to impossible in some years. Switching to Soybeans or Sorgum is always and option as both are good food sources for all types of wildlife, give you a longer and later planting window, and seed for both is easily found as most local seed dealers will have it on hand.
